This morning we set off on some more clothes shopping down 6th avenue before returning the hotel for an early lunch.
We walked across the road and entered the subway from Penn Station and took the train down to South Ferry, quite close to Battery Park. We boarded the ferry and headed off to Liberty Island to visit the Statue of Liberty.
Some history – the statue was a present from France to the United States to celebrate their 100th anniversary of independence in 1876. It took around 12 years to build and the United States paid for and built the pedestal that the statue sits on.
The above photo is a replica of the foot – we are each sitting on a toe.
It is a magnificent statue and beautiful from every angle. We were able to visit the museum and then walk up the pedestal to the viewing area just short of the statue itself.
We discovered that the tickets to the crown (to which Lindy and Stuart have visited previously many years ago) are sold out several months in advance so we were unable to go right to the top today.
We caught the ferry back to Battery Park and then walked to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The pools are located where the base of the twin towers were and are beautiful. We spent some time explaining to the children what happened on that day in 2001 to provide some perspective.
We then walked to the nearest subway station and caught the train back to Penn Station.
After some dinner we headed out again walking up 7th Avenue to Times Square again for some night time viewing. We visited many stores and bought some items from the Disney store.
